Join Sea Star Explorations for a transformative 11-day adventure through Japan! This program is designed for participants aged 16 and up who are eager to investigate the intersection of marine science, conservation and Japanese culture.

Departing from the U.S., we’ll arrive in Okinawa the following evening to begin our Japanese adventure. Every program visits Okinawa, Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo, although some activities vary depending on the season.

We’ll spend four days exploring Okinawa—often called the "Hawaii of Japan"—and its unique subtropical marine environment. A boat excursion to the beautiful Kerama Islands offers the opportunity to search for marine mammals during the March program, while participants on the June program will enjoy snorkeling in the islands’ crystal-clear waters.

Our journey then continues to Kyoto and Osaka, where we’ll experience Japan’s rich cultural heritage and maritime history. Highlights include a traditional tea ceremony, visits to historic temples and shrines, and time at one of the world’s premier aquariums.

Next, we’ll ride the famous Shinkansen bullet train to Tokyo, the world’s largest metropolitan area. There, we’ll experience the energy of Shibuya Crossing, explore Akihabara—Tokyo’s renowned Electric Town—visit the National Museum of Nature and Science, and discover the incredible variety of Japanese cuisine.

With activities designed for a wide range of interests and ages, the program combines cultural exploration with marine science and conservation. Participants will learn about Japan’s relationship with the ocean through discussions on topics such as sustainable fisheries, the impacts of whaling, and the country's ongoing efforts to protect its extensive coastline.

The March departure also features special guest Zack Klyver, a Maine-based marine mammal scientist and educator who has led more than 3,000 whale-watching tours in the Gulf of Maine. Having worked as a marine mammal lecturer in Antarctica, an observer in the Arctic, and now serving as an advisor to the Blue Green Future team, Zack brings a wealth of firsthand knowledge and experience to the program.
